A military cargo plane crashed in Sudan, killing all crew members.
A military cargo plane crashed on Tuesday while attempting to land at an airbase in eastern Sudan, killing all crew members, AFP reported, citing two military sources in the country. A military source, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a technical malfunction caused the Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft to crash as it attempted to land at the Digna airbase in Port Sudan. Another military source confirmed the deaths of all crew members aboard the Ilyushin Il-76. The Sudanese military has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, and the number of people on board at the time of the crash has not been disclosed. The Soviet-era Ilyushin Il-76 is a mainstay of military air transport services, used to transport supplies and troops to conflict zones. This crash occurred as Sudan grapples with one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. The ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of approximately 12 million people, either internally or as refugees abroad, in addition to causing extensive damage to infrastructure.
