Burhan abolishes the positions of deputy army chief and his assistants in Sudan
Khartoum, April 6, 2026 – The Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced on Monday the abolition of the positions of Deputy Commander-in-Chief and Assistant Commanders of the Army. This decision comes a year after clashes erupted between the Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. Earlier, al-Burhan had appointed Shams al-Din Kabbashi as his deputy, and Yasser al-Atta and Ibrahim Jaber as his assistants within the Army Command, while retaining their membership in the Transitional Sovereign Council. In a statement issued by the Sudanese Army Spokesperson’s Office, it was announced that the Chairman of the Sovereign Council had revoked Decree No. 164 of 2023 concerning these appointments, while retaining the aforementioned individuals as members of the Armed Forces Command. This development comes days after sweeping changes in the army's General Staff, where Burhan relieved Lieutenant General Mohamed Osman Al-Hussein of his post as Chief of Staff and appointed Yasser Al-Atta, a member of the Sovereignty Council, as the new head of the body, stressing its restructuring and the inclusion of new members.
