The town of Kubum, located in South Darfur State, was bombed by a drone on Monday, resulting in civilian casualties, according to local sources.
June 2026, South Darfur, The attack occurred amidst escalating tensions and tribal clashes between the Salamat and Bani Halba tribes in and around Kubum. With both sides continuing to mobilize and recruit fighters, a tense atmosphere prevails, raising fears of further violence. The Salamat and Bani Halba tribes are considered key tribal forces supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), having deployed thousands of fighters to bolster military operations since the outbreak of the war in Sudan. According to eyewitnesses who spoke to local media, the drone used in the attack fired three missiles, targeting the town's market and rural hospital, causing significant casualties and material damage. A doctor working in the area indicated that the drone had taken off from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, to provide support to a local tribal group. The region also witnessed further violence, with armed men setting fire to the neighboring town of Markandi and large areas of Kubum itself. Last night's fires destroyed dozens of homes and displaced a significant number of residents who are now facing deteriorating humanitarian conditions. Meanwhile, residents are increasingly concerned that the fighting could spread to Central Darfur State, especially given the ongoing calls for tribal mobilization in the Um Dukhun area near the border with the Central African Republic. There are also reports of intensified efforts to recruit more young men to join the armed tribal conflicts. It is worth noting that the conflicts between the Salamat and Bani Halba tribes are not new. In 2023, the Kubum area and parts of Central Darfur witnessed fierce fighting between the two tribes, resulting in numerous deaths and the displacement of thousands after villages and property were burned. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are facing accusations of involvement in these bloody clashes. Online activists have circulated videos showing armed tribesmen from both sides wearing RSF uniforms and using RSF military vehicles—equipment typically reserved for this regular force.
